Logo Design

Why is the right logo design important?

When you are driving down the street and see a gold "M," even your two-year old knows what it represents.  You don't have to see the name of the restaurant to know what it is.

When shopping for athletic shoes and apparel, you know right away what the check mark on the side means.

Which major auto manufacturer uses a plus sign?  Which one uses an oval?  What color is that oval?  Which one uses a pentagon?  How about a sheep?  Is the sheep male or female?

These are all examples of good logos.  These logos (when added to some great ad campaigns) produce brand recognition.  What that means is that the consumer knows at a glance which restaurant they are approaching on the interstate, which brand of shoes they are looking at, and which auto manufacturer makes that cool looking car parked next to them in the supermarket parking lot.

If you like the car, you may go to a dealer to look at one like it, or you may surf the web to find one.  To do either of these things, you just need to match the logo on the site or the dealer's sign to the logo on the car.

Your logo should do the same thing.  It should be easily recognized.  When looking at marketing or advertising your product, your logo is the most important part of your business.  It should be eye catching, distinct, and original.

Eye Catching Logos

The example of your two-year old recognizing the golden "M" is a good indication of a good eye catching logo.  No matter where it is:  in print, on a sign, or on TV - if you see the golden "M," you notice it and you know who it represents.  If you went to the moon and saw the golden "M," you would know that you could get a burger and fries there.

Distinct Logos

A distinct logo sends a clear message.  Going back to the golden "M" -if you see it, you don't ask yourself what it represents; you know.  You could be half asleep on a Saturday morning and still find breakfast on the way to soccer.

Original Logos

Besides the fact that most logos are registered trademarks and duplicating them is against the law, it also makes good business sense to be original.  For instance, if you tried to advertise mud flaps with a golden "M," you would probably draw more customers looking for a burger and fries than customers looking for mud flaps.

How are good logo designs created?

The best way to start the design process is to ask yourself these questions:

1.  What image do I want my company to have?
Do you want a cute graphic logo or a more traditional logo?

2.  What type of client am I trying to attract?
If you are selling toys, you want to be noticed by kids.  If you are a law firm, you want to be noticed by adults.

3.  How will I use my logo?
If your logo will only be on the web, you may want an animated logo.  If your logo will be recreated in neon, you may want something simple and easy to read from a distance.

4.  Where will I use my logo?
If your logo is going to appear in the lower left corner of every print ad you do, you will want a logo that is as recognizable in a small size as it is a large size.  If your logo is going to be embroidered on shirts, you will want one that will be easy to reproduce with thread.

5.  What am I trying to sell with my logo?
If you are selling a product, you might want to consider a graphic in your logo that represents the product you are selling.  If you are selling a service, you may want to concentrate on words rather than pictures.

These questions and others will help you decided what kind of logo design will be best for your company.
